Backyards or open spaces are to be provided for every domestic building now existing: and open spaces and scavenging lanes for new houses.
Latrines must be provided in all future houses; and the Sanitary Board may compel the provision of adequate latrines in any building where they consider it necessary.
Also the Government has voted $12,000 in 1903 and a like sum in 1904 for the construction of Public Latrines and Urinals.
Public Bathhouses are also being erected at a cost of $10,000.
The great necessity is to resume the insanitary areas and the Government is doing all it can in this direction.
For resumption and compensation over $100,000 was voted in 1903 and $410,000 in 1904. The progress of the work is of course limited by the necessity of building new houses pari passu with the work of demolition in order to supply adequate accommodation for the population and for this reason it is impossible for the Government to work faster than it is now doing.
The remainder of Surgeon-General Evatt's statements are too vague to need discussion. The deficiency of the sanitary staff has been remedied of recent years and it is only necessary to quote the figures
